Good morning all and welcome back to my latest post in my “Ultimate Hero” Challenge.
The previous season at Lealtad in the Spanish 3rd tier had gone really well, predicted 10th we had ended 2nd but we were defeated in the end of Season promotion playoffs in the 2nd of 3 rounds. Overall it was a great season and set us up nicely for the next season where we were now one of the favourites to claim a top 4 playoff spot
As mentioned in my last post we were going to lose one of my most influential players. Left winger Jorge refused to sign a new contract, this was a major blow to my preparations.
I really needed to bolster the squad, over the previous season we found ourselves on numerous occasions short in midfield due to injuries so I needed at least 2, maybe 3 central midfielders, Jorge needed to be replaced and I could do with a backup Gk and Striker.
Once again I made quite a few signings so here they all are:
Signing one – Xu Xin
Signed on a free transfer, Xin is a Chinese international and will my 1st choice holding midfielder
Signing 2 – Stephen Babalola
A versatile winger/fullback which with my lack of resources is much needed, Babalola was signed primarily as my replacement for Jorge. Signed on a free transfer
Signing 3 – Fran Ochoa
Ochoa will provide good competition in midfield, will be a great B2B player. Signed on a free transfer
Signing 4 – Juan Martinez
My 3rd midfield signing, Martinez will play as my CM(a). Another free transfer
Signing 5 – Andres Barrera
Another versatile forward who will provide good competition. Signed on a season long loan from Real Zaragoza
Signing 6 – Alvaro
Another season long loan signing, this time from Real Majadahonda, Alvarto will be my back-up goalkeeper
Signing 7 – Jacinto José Ibanez
As I only have two recognised strikers this guy will be there if either of them get injured, another season long loan from Toledo
So with my signings complete my squad looks pretty good, we have a lot of players who can play in more than one position so we have a lot of cover
The board expect us to come in the top 4 this season which I feel is easily achievable, Albacete who lost in the playoffs last season are by far the best team in the division but after that we can beat anyone else
The domestic season – Copa del Rey
This is a competition we weren’t entered into last season, it must enter teams depending on their league finish so this season we are entered into the 1st round.
We had a really good run in the Cup getting through the first two round against fellow 3rd tier teams, we then played another 3rd tier team Sabadell and managed to lose at home in extra team. I was disappointed we lost but to get through 2 rounds was pretty decent
Spanish Segunda Division B
The season was literally a carbon copy of the season before, Albacete were top all season and we spent the whole season leading the chasing pack. We never went out the top 4 and were 2nd from around the mid point but we could never close Albacete down. The only reason to come top is you only have to win 1 playoff game to get promoted whereas if you come 2nd to 4th you have to get through 3 rounds.
So the season drew to a close and as expected we ended 2nd again. We did manage to beat our points total of 76 last season which was pleasing. It was a great season overall and I went into the playoffs in good form
In the first round we played Ferrol who had ended 4th in their division, we were favourites to win and in the 1st leg we got the all important lead as we won 2-0 away.
In the 2nd leg complacency set in, we did take the lead but Ferrol came back at us to take the the tie 2-1. We managed to scrape through 3-2 on aggregate
We then played Real Jaen in the 2nd round, they had ended 2nd in their division and on paper looked a tougher test. One piece of bad news. Our star striker Comochu got injured in the previous game and is out for 6 months, it was a devastating blow as he was our main source of goals.
We played the 1st away and lost the game 1-0. It was a disappointing performance and result but we are usually good at home so knew we could turn it around
And we did just that but only just! We battered them all game but they stood firm until Right Winger Espina popped up with the goal that levelled the tie. We headed into extra time, and then it happened, young loaned Ibanez scored and we took the lead!! Jaen came at us but we held out and we were through to the final playoff round!
Where we would play Sabadell (remember them from the our Cup defeat?). It was going to be tough, their team was much better than ours and with injuries our team was really depleted.
The 1st leg again was away and it was a chaotic game, we ended up losing the game 4-2, was the dream over at the final hurdle? Well with 2 away goals to our name we had a chance but only a slim one.
I put the team out on all out attack and totally went for it! And it seemed to work. After 9 mins Espina had scored to get it back to 4-3, we went on the search for that decisive goal but they held out and on 53mins the inevitable happened, Sabadell scored, we now needed 2 goals to win and it ended up being a step too far, we had lost at the final stage.
I was absolutely gutted, but proud of my team. I just wonder how much better we would’ve done if Comochu had been fit.
Well we go again next season and the good news is Albacete went up so the best team in the league aren’t there anymore which gives us a great chance of winning the league.
On a bad note Comochu will not sign a new contract so my best player will be leaving which is devastating.
So the season is over and once again we fell just short but overall I really enjoyed the season and I know with the right additions we can go that one step further next season.
So who were my best players? Here are a few screens to show you the stats and end of season review screens
As you can see Comochu was by far my best player so to lose him will be gutting, Barrera was fantastic all season so I will be attempting to get him on another season long loan.
So another season down and it ends in disappointment again! Hopefully my next update will bring good news
