Good afternoon all and welcome back the latest update on the Alphabet Challenge.
Last time out I was in Colombia with Atletico Nacional. I had taken over half way through the season and won the 2nd Phase of the Colombian League. I had given myself the aim for this season to win at least 1 Phase and also to come top of the Overall League table. I would then move onto a new letter.
Prior to the season started I really needed to strengthen my defence. I lost 2 players due to them being on loan and also another 2 who were out of contract and not good enough. I set about the goal of wanting at least 1 RB, 1 LB and 2 CBs. I also needed to sign myself a new LM.
Here are the transfers I made. As you can see I made a few mid season as well. This was due to letting unhappy players leave and also I lost my star striker to Nottingham Forest as they met his release clause.
Just a quick run through the transfer. Zuniga and Maciel were signed as first team CBs. Valenciano is my LB. Minda can play Right and Left Back. Gomez is a LM and as you will see later on had a great season. Caicedo was signed to replace Yildrim who left to Notts Forest.
Now to the season, we started with a Super Cup game against Deportivo Cali. We thrashed them in the 1st leg winning 7-1 and then took our foot off the gas in the 2nd leg losing 2-0 but overall it was a comfortable 7-4 aggregate win
In the League we were unbelievable. We smashed everyone in our way in the 1st Phase coming top and also winning ending unbeaten in the Play off group stage and winning the grand final
Only 2 defeats over the whole phase was sensational!
In the 2nd Phase we had a more tougher time due to international call-ups, unhappy players and injuries but still won the Phase, topping the league and winning the final
5 defeats this time but still ending top. We scraped through on penalties in the final!
What an epic season winning both Phases and topping both tables. Here is how the overall table looked. As mentioned in my previous post the games are all a bit messed up as they include all matches so we played 52 whereas teams at the bottom played 36!
And just to add to the fantastic season we also won the Domestic Cup Competition. The Cup starts with a group phase with groups of 6 playing each other twice.
An easy group win, 9 clean sheets in 10 games was an amazing achievement
Here is how the knockout rounds went
Each round was over 2 legs. But we were never really challenged at all.
So there you go, a clean sweep of all competitions! What a way to leave the Letter C behind.
We also won a few end of season awards. My LM signing Gomez won the Young Player of the year award
And the Player of the Year went to RW Nicolas Bernal, he broke numerous league records including Highest Average Rating, Record Players of the Match and Record Number of Assists
We also ha 7 players in the Team of the Year
So that’s C complete, we now move on to D where there is only 1 Country – Denmark. Be nice to get back into Europe after a few season in South America.
